Qualifying Results
Far Hills,
N.J. – Twelve USGA champions, including the current U.S. Girls’
Junior champion, highlight the list of players who have earned
spots in the 150-player field for the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open
through sectional qualifying, which was held at eight sites
and concluded June 18 in Rochester, N.Y.
Sixty-seven
players were fully exempt into the championship, leaving 83
spaces open for qualifiers in the field. Two places are still
being held open for the winners of the next two LPGA events.
The USGA received 971 entries for the 57th U.S.
Women’s Open, scheduled for July 4-7, 2002 at Prairie Dunes
Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Nicole
Perrot, 18, of Chile, won the 2001 U.S. Girls’ Junior, and
has since turned professional. Aree Wongluekiet, 16, of Bradenton,
Fla., won the 1999 U.S. Girls’ Junior at age 13, which remains
the record for youngest-ever winner of a USGA championship.
Three-time
USGA champion Pearl Sinn of Huntington Beach, Calif., (1988
and 1989 U.S. Women’s Public Links and 1988 U.S. Women’s Amateur
champion) earned a spot at the Women’s Open, as did Amy Fruhwirth
of Cypress, Calif., who won the 1991 U.S. Women’s Amateur
at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

are 1979 U.S. Girls’ Junior champion Penny Hammel of Decatur,
Ill.; 1983 U.S. Girls’ Junior champion Kim Saiki of Las Vegas,
Nev.; 1984 U.S. Women’s Amateur winner Deb Richard of Ponte
Vedra Beach, Fla.; 1985 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion
Danielle Ammaccapane of Phoenix, Ariz.; 1986 U.S. Women’s
Amateur Public Links winner Cindy Schreyer of New Fairfield,
Conn.; 1991 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champion Tracy
Hanson of Twin Lakes, Idaho; 1997 U.S. Girls’ Junior winner
Beth Bauer of Tampa, Fla.; and Catherine Cartwright of Bonita
Springs, Fla., who won the 2000 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public
Links championship.

annually by the USGA. Other championships include the U.S.
Open, the U.S. Senior Open, and 10 national amateur championships.
