An interview with:
KARRIE WEBB
Q. General comments about
the round?
KARRIE WEBB: Well, actually, I'm still pretty shocked myself
because the way I hit it today, really, for the way I led up into this tournament
is totally out of the blue.
I think you probably got -- i don't know. I don't know,
sometimes I get a little too (inaudible) but I was introduced from Boynton Beach,
Florida, not Australia.
And I made bogey -- and then bogeyed the next hole, and I
really didn't get into -- after the first two holes, I really just didn't
get into the flow of the course. I felt like I hadn't been on the course, even
though I felt like I couldn't be better prepared for the tournament.
I felt great going into today. I thought if not any, I had
as good a chance to win this year as I have in the past two, so it's just really
out of the blue.
Q. First time you've been
introduced as a Floridian?
KARRIE WEBB: Not that I have any objections to living in Florida,
but I'm not from there. I love it there, but I'm not from there.
Q. (Inaudible) 8th green?
KARRIE WEBB: The 8th green, I think I did that a couple times
today.
Q. What was going through
your mind --
KARRIE WEBB: Just what I just told you. I'm miffed at how
things went today. I really didn't expect it.
Q. (Inaudible)
? KARRIE WEBB: I hit it in the front bunker and hit it over
the back into the bushes and had to take an unplayable and do the same thing
again. I couldn't see. That's a pretty deep bunker. I couldn't see anything.
Q. (Inaudible)
? KARRIE WEBB: I hit a fat 8-iron.
Q. Did any of the hoopla surrounding
you affect you?
KARRIE WEBB: No, I'm always extremely nervous on the first
tee of a U.S. Open, and I was today, and I think it's tough
playing a par 3 as a first hole, especially under the circumstances, and I was
in between clubs as well so -- but, you know, I think -- you know,
I look back, and I don't know how things would have turned out, but if I made
a 3- or 4-footer for par in the first, I don't know if I would have missed the
fairway in the next hole. It just wasn't meant to go well today.
Q. Was there ever a point
where you felt, maybe I'm turning it around?
KARRIE WEBB: When I birdied 17 and I hit two pretty good shots
into 18 and two fairly decent shots down 1, but then, you know, I just had four
holes in a row -- five holes in a row, really, where it didn't even touch
the face of the golf course.
Q. (Inaudible) distance control
today?
KARRIE WEBB: No, I just wasn't hitting it very straight. I
knew that there was long grass out there, but in practice hadn't come close
to hitting in it, and I was in it so many times today it was ridiculous.
Q. (Inaudible)
? KARRIE WEBB: It didn't really throw me off but, I don't know,
I like being -- i like hearing that I'm from Australia. I'm proud about
that.
Q. They should at least introduce
you as the Open champion?
KARRIE WEBB: Yeah.
Q. You said you were in between
clubs. What clubs?
KARRIE WEBB: 8 and 9. As it turned out, I probably could have
comfortably hit a 9, but it's hard to say you're going to hit a hard 9 first
swing of the day. I'd rather hit a hard driver.
Q. (Inaudible) tomorrow?
KARRIE WEBB: I think I'll have to play my butt off to make
the cut, I think.
Q. (Inaudible) anything change?
KARRIE WEBB: Obviously things changed. I don't know what it
was. If I did, I wouldn't have hit so many off the planet today, but I'm going
to go to the range. I don't want to be there too long because I got to tee off
soon, so hopefully I can work a few things out and shoot a few under tomorrow
and at least play in the weekend.
Q. Did you talk to your caddy
at all --
KARRIE WEBB: I think he was just as miffed as I was. I asked
him on the 8th hole if he saw anything, and the only thing he saw was that I
wasn't swinging aggressively, but I don't know where it was going.
