Unisys and the USGA

The United States Golf Association has served as the national governing body of golf in the USA since its formation in 1894. A non-profit organization run by golfers for the benefit of golfers, the USGA is an association of member clubs and courses, consisting of more than 9,100 golf facilities, and is committed to promoting policies and programs that are "For The Good of The Game." An executive committee of 16 volunteers oversees the Association. More than 30 committees, comprising more than 1,200 volunteers from all parts of the country, serve as well. A full-time professional staff of approximately 250 directs the Association's day-to-day functions from Golf House, the USGA's headquarters in Far Hills, New Jersey.

Unisys has had a long-term association with this august body that dates back to 1984, since which time they have supplied scoring services for all its major televised tournaments: the prestigious U.S. Open (one of the four leading golf tournaments in the entire world), the U.S. Women's Open and the U.S. Senior Open, the US Amateur Championship and in 2001 The Walker Cup, jointly run by the USGA and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club

The Unisys scoring system covers the following major areas of activities:

  • Equipment and software required for scoring and on-site activities with the USGA, the media center, all on course scoreboards, museum, scoring and statistics trailer and championship offices, together with supplying all scores and statistics throughout the entire four days of the Tournament.
  • Work Stations and software required for all corporate hospitality facilities.
  • All equipment required for the USGA-contracted TV broadcasters--this currently include the U.S networks NBC and ESPN, the UK's BSkyB network and Japan's TV ASAHI network.
  • Provide scoring information on a daily up-to-the-minute basis for posting on all of the the USGA's official Web sites
