The USGA assumed sponsorship at the request
of the Ladies' Professional Golf Association and conducted its first Women's
Open Championship, the eighth in the series, at the Country Club of Rochester,
N.Y. It was an auspicious event, artistically and financially.
Miss Betsy Rawls, now representing Spartanburg,
S.C., tied Mrs. Jacqueline Pung, of Honolulu, T.H., with 75-78-74-75—302.
They met the next day at 18 holes, and Miss Rawls won her second Championship,
71 to 77.
Miss Patricia Lesser finished in a tie
for sixth at 315 and was the best amateur for the second time. There were
37 entrants, including 17 professionals.
