Miss Mickey Wright, of San Diego, Calif.,
set a scoring record for the second consecutive year, with 287. Miss Louise
Suggs, of Sea Island, Ga., was second. They finished in the same order
in 1958. Repeating another part of the script, Miss Anne Quast again was
low amateur.
Miss Wright played the Churchill Valley
Country Club course near Pittsburgh two strokes better than Miss Suggs,
who led the Championship after each of the first two rounds. Miss Suggs
also broke the Open record of 290 set by Miss Wright in 1958. Miss Suggs
closed with a 69.
Miss Wright was having putting troubles
and felt the need several times for advice by telephone from Paul Runyan
in California. Miss Quast's 299 was the first score below 300 by an amateur
in the history of the event.
