Miss Carol Mann, of Towson, Md., after an indifferent opening round of 78, scored 70, 70 and 72 to win with a total of 290. The runner-up was Mrs. Kathy Cornelius, the 1956 Champion, whose brilliant 69, three under par, in the final round gave her a total of 292.

Miss Mann, 6 feet 3 inches tall, played the final three holes in two pars and a birdie. Her prize was $4,000, a record for this Championship, and part of $17,780 distributed among 28 professionals who completed 72 holes. Mrs. Cornelius was six under par for 20 par-3 holes played and had four straight 2s at the 163-yard eighth hole. Miss Marilynn Smith, who has competed in al 13 USGA Women's Open Championships, was third at 294.

Mrs. Helen Sigel Wilson, of Gladwyne, Pa., shared fifth place with 296 and thus set a record low score for an amateur in the Open. Miss Catherine Lacoste, of France, was second low amateur at 304. Miss Mickey Wright, the defender and four times the Champion, was unable to start because of a hand injury.

Miss Margie Masters, a professional from Australia, finished with a 67 to tie the record score for one round. The final round was telecast nationally for the first time and the last two rounds were played in two days instead of one as before.
