Betsy King led from start to finish, shot 278 at the Indianwood Golf and Country Club, in Lake Orion, Michigan, and won by four strokes over Nancy Lopez, with 282.

In her best finish in 11 previous Women's Opens, Miss King placed third. She jumped into the lead with a four-under-par 67 on the first day of play, faltered near the close of the third round, and slipped into a tie for the lead with Patty Sheehan, but Miss King birdied four of the first nine holes of the fourth round, and regained a comfortable lead.

The Woman's Open was Miss King's fifth victory of 1989, and one that she called special. Miss King and Miss Lopez each shot final rounds of 68, but the best round of the Championship was played by Ayako Okamoto equalled the Woman's Open record by shooting 65 in the fourth round.

Miss Lopez was the runner-up for the third time. Four players broke par for 72 holes over the 6,109-yard course. Vicki Goetze was the low amateur, with a score of 300. She won the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship a month later.
