Matthew enjoyed a successful amateur career while growing up in Scotland. She was the 1986 Scottish Girls champion and the 1988 and 1989 Scottish Under-21 Stroke Play champion. She captured the Scottish Amateur title on three occasions in 1991, 1993 and 1994. In addition, she won the 1993 British Amateur title and was a member of the 1990, 1992 and 1994 Curtis Cup teams.

Prior to joining the LPGA Tour, she competed in three WPG European Tour events, and finished in the top 20 in each of them. Matthew made her Solheim Cup debut as a member of the 1998 European team.

During the 2001 season Matthew captured her first LPGA title at the Cup Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Open. She also had her most successful season to date, earning $704,123.
