Steinhauer played collegiate golf at the University of Texas where she claimed five victories and All-America honors in 1985. She also was named MVP in 1983 and 1985. Steinhauer was low amateur in the 1983 U.S. Women's Open.

Prior to joining the LPGA, she participated on the Futures Tour and qualified for the LPGA Tour on her first attempt. Steinhauer was a member of the winning 1994 U.S. Solheim Cup team and was a captain's pick for the 1998 Team.

During the 2001 season her best finish was a tie for fourth at the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. Steinhauer also carded a season-low 66, during the second round of the Standard Register PING and the Asahi Ryokuken International Championship.
