Gustafson started playing golf at the age of 10. She turned professional in 1992 and joined the WPGET in 1994. Gustafson won the 1995 Swiss Open and the 1997 Thailand Open.

Gustafson qualified for the LPGA Tour on her first attempt.

Gustafson made her Solheim Cup debut in 1998 as a member of the European Team.

During the 2001 season Gustafson won her third LPGA title at the Subaru Memorial of Naples, where she posted a career-low score of 64 during the second round.

She also finished second and crossed the $1 million mark in career earnings at the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship, where she lost a two-hole playoff with fellow Swede Annika Sorenstam.
