Mrs. George Zaharias, representing the
Tam O'Shanter Country Club, Niles, Ill., dominated the Championship at
the Salem Country Club, Peabody, Mass., making an inspiring comeback after
an operation for cancer in the spring of 1953. Her score of 72-71-73-75—291
was only three over par and 12 strokes ahead of the runner-up, Miss Betty
Hicks. She had nothing higher than a 5 for the 72 holes. It was her third
victory.
Miss Mickey Wright, of La Jolla, Calif.,
the 1952 Girls' Junior Champion, tied for fourth at 308 and was leading
amateur. The event attracted 58 entries, of whom 53 started; 21 were professionals.
Prize money was $7,500, the winner receiving
$2,000.
