Betsy King won her second consecutive Women's Open by shooting a steady four under par total of 284 and edging Patty Sheehan by one stroke at the Atlantic Athletic Club, in Duluth, Georgia.

Danielle Ammaccapane and Dottie Mochie who shot 66 on the final day, finished two strokes back, at 286. Vicki Goetze was low amateur for the second successive year, at 300. Rains over the first three days of the championship forced 36 holes to be played on the final day.

Miss Sheehan led by 12 strokes early in the third round, and by 11 early in the final round before she fell from the lead by playing the last 33 holes in nine over par.

Nineteen players shot sub-par scores in the first round, led by Miss Sheehan's and Jane Geddes's 66s, but after four rounds only five players remained under par. Before Miss King, Hollis Stacy had been the last to win successive Women's Opens, in 1977 and 1978.
