Local Legend Boyns Part of History Women’s Open at Pebble
Mina Harigae, the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open runner-up from Monterey, Calif., isn’t the only individual with local knowledge taking part of this week’s historic U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach. Casey Boyns has been lugging bags around the iconic venue for more than 40 years. Boyns, 67, the senior member of the caddie yard, is part of yet another USGA Open competition at Pebble. Having caddied in three previous U.S. Opens (he was a forecaddie in the 1972 championship), Boyns landed the bag of professional Riuxin Liu, of the People’s Republic of China. Nicknamed “The Legend,” Boyns also can play a little. He won a pair of California Amateurs at Pebble Beach before many of this week’s contestants were born (1989, 1993). He’s also competed in 18 USGA championships, including the 2010 U.S. Senior Open. One of eight local Pebble Beach caddies who got bags for the championship, Boyns often gets requests from resort guests, and he’s caddied for such luminaries at Michael Jordan, actors Michael Keaton and Tim Matheson, and comedian George Lopez.
