Two Curtis Cuppers Among First U.S. Women's Open Qualifiers
A pair of former USA Curtis Cup competitors were the first two players to qualify for the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. Ex-Duke University All-American Lindy Duncan (2012) and former University of Arkansas standout Brooke Matthews (2021) shot 134 (10 under) and 133, respectively at The Club at Mediterra in Naples, Fla., on May 9. This will be Duncan’s sixth U.S. Women’s Open start and Matthews’ first.
Not long after they qualified, 14-year-old Angela Zhang, of Bellevue, Wash., survived a 4-for-2 playoff at Shannopin Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa., to punch her ticket to Pebble. Zhang then caught a flight back home to prepare for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash., where she’s partnering with fellow teen and 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur co-medalist Alice Zhao, of Irvine, Calif.
