Qualifier: Shot 70-73 at Shannopin Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 9
The 14-year-old from Bellevue, Wash., earned her first U.S. Women's Open start by holing a 25-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole of a 4-for-2 playoff at the Shannopin Country Club qualifier. This result came just a few days before Zhang and her parter, Alice Zhao, competed in the 2023 U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. Zhang is no stranger to the national stage. In 2019, she claimed the Girls 7-9 Division of the Drive, Chip & Putt National Championship at Augusta National Golf Club. Last June, Zhang captured the Washington Women's State Amateur, becoming at age 13, the youngest-ever winner of that competition. It was part of a huge 2022 season that saw her win seven Washington Junior Golf Association titles, including the WJGA State Championship, en route to garning the Washington Golf Girls' Junior Player of Year. Zhang has also won three American Junior Golf Association titles. Zhang was born in Alabama, but spent part of her early childhood in her parents' native China before the family moved to Washington to provide better educational and athletic opportunities.
